Two Indian men have been sentenced to three years in jail for running a prostitution racket in Bahrain. The duo is among 19 men and women standing trial at the Lower Criminal Court, according to a newspaper report. The court also sentenced nine of the Indian women for two years each for practicing prostitution, the Gulf Daily News report said. All men and women will be deported after they complete their sentences. Court documents say the police received information that a building in Manama was being used as a prostitution den.
Prostitution in Bahrain is illegal   but it has gained a reputation in the Middle East as major destination for sex tourism. The Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights reported in that there were more than 13, prostitutes in the country and that the number was rising. Sex trafficking is a problem in the country. Prostitution is common, especially in Manama.
For a Muslim country, the number of women who work as prostitutes in Bahrain is remarkably high. The sale of alcohol and sex are divisive issues that could spell trouble during October's parliamentary elections. By Malachy Browne.
