The conversation only confirmed what Conoley had been praying about. And his students are being affected. I was just blown away by that. In seeking resources to minister to his students, Conoley discovered no ministries exist solely to reach teens struggling with homosexuality. Exodus International and other notable Christian ministries have links that address students, but none devoted exclusively to teenagers.
LGBT teens are more likely to be suspended or expelled from schools, sometimes because they were trying to protect themselves from bullies. But a recent study published in the Journal of Homosexuality found that gay, bisexual, and lesbian teens who simply switched schools or living situations did not fare as well as their peers who linked up with larger LGBT groups. For the study, the University of Arizona youth development professor Russell Toomey and his co-authors relied on a sample of people in their early 20s who were recruited from LGBT organizations near San Francisco. They examined the correlations between the kinds of strategies the young adults had used to cope with the stress of being a sexual minority in high school and their overall well-being in young adulthood.
Harold S. Koplewicz, MD. Eighteen-year-old Tyler Clementi, year-old Billy Lucas, and year-olds Asher Brown and Seth Walsh were living in different corners of America—New Jersey, Indiana, Texas, and California—but each of them was subjected to the same kind of intolerance and cruelty, including a callous violation of their online privacy. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents , and gay teens are 4 times more likely than straight teens to attempt suicide.
Few parenting concerns during adolescence generate as much emotional turbulence as the possibility that one's child might have a homosexual orientation. For many parents, especially those deeply committed to traditional values, the thought of a child becoming involved in homosexual relationships raises unsettling moral questions For some, reactions to homosexuality extend into the darker emotions of hatred and loathing. In contrast, many influential voices in media, government and health care state that sexual orientation is inborn and unchangeable; however, that has never been proven. In their view, if your child is destined to be attracted to members of the same sex, nothing can or should be done about it other than accepting it. Gay and lesbian activists proclaim that adolescents who feel same-sex inclinations should explore, embrace and celebrate their homosexual identity and that their parents should celebrate it along with them.
